Savia designs and implements an automated intermediate installation for plastic coil handling

At Grupo Savia, we have designed, manufactured and implemented an intermediate installation for the transit of plastic coils between the extrusion area and the production area for garbage and retail bags, for a leading manufacturer specializing in biodegradable bags and films.

The project responds to the client’s need to automate and optimize the internal flow of coils, ensuring proper identification, weighing, measurement, strapping and labeling prior to final storage and subsequent entry into the production machines.

Automated flow from extrusion to storage

Before final storage, coils of different dimensions pass through the intermediate installation designed by Savia, where the following operations are carried out fully automatically:

  • Individual barcode reading
  • Connection to the client’s ERP system
  • Weighing using load cells
  • Length and height measurement
  • Volume calculation
  • Parameterized automatic strapping
  • Automatic label printing and application

Integration with AGVs and management systems

A first AGV transports the coils from the extrusion area to the motorized conveyor feeding the installation.

Each coil is assigned an individual barcode. The system includes a reader capable of capturing this information and connecting directly to the client’s ERP to retrieve fixed data associated with each unit.

Once in the safety area, the coil is weighed. As it moves forward, the system automatically detects the coil’s length and height, enabling the calculation of volume and the parameters required to determine the number of straps to be applied.

The strapping machine receives this information in real time and automatically adjusts the number of straps.

Full traceability and automatic labeling

Variable data obtained during the process (length, weight and volume) are integrated with the fixed data previously extracted from the ERP.

The system generates the print order for a label, which is automatically applied at the final stage of the process. The AGV then collects the weighed, strapped and labeled coils and transports them to the storage racks until they are required for use in the production lines.

Design adapted to the existing layout and productivity improvement

The installation was developed based on a layout agreed with the client, adapting to the available physical space within the production facility.

The system not only meets the defined functional requirements but also exceeds the coil-per-hour production rate initially requested by the client, improving operational efficiency and internal process traceability.
